Fed up with tsame old idilis and dosas? Try out something new for breakfast and shorten the name as u.appam, so the kids find it easier to ask for


01. Boiled rice – 1 cup
02. Raw rice – 1 cup
03. Coconut (grated) – 2-3 cups
04. Salt – to taste
05. Sugar –  2-3 dstspn

For the seasoning
01. Coconut oil – 2  dstspn
02. Dry red chillies (broken) - 4
03. Mustard seeds – 2 tsp
04. Urad dal – 2 tsp
05. Curry leaves – 4 stalks

01. Clean and wash the rice well and soak in water for 3-4 hours.
02. Grind the soaked rice, along with the grated coconut, into a slightly coarse paste.
03. Add sugar and salt and bring it to the consistency of idli batter.
04. To season, heat the coconut oil  and add the mustard seeds.
05. When the splutter, add the dry red chillies, mustard seeds, urad dal and curry leaves and saute well.
06. When they turn brown, add this seasoning to the batter, mix well and keep  aside  for one hour.
07. Heat a pan (urli), grease with a little coconut oil and pour the batter to make an appam on a low flame. When one side browns, turn it over and remove when the other side also turns brown.
